Historical Band
Trip Shakespeare
Active years: early 1980s to 1992
Minneapolis, Twin Cities metro
Minneapolis rock band of the late 1980s and early 1990s that recorded for A&M and led to the founding of Semisonic.
History
Trip Shakespeare grew out of Minneapolis in the early 1980s, when Matt Wilson teamed up with drummer Elaine Harris. Bassist John Munson and Dan Wilson joined to form the best-known lineup, and percussionist Tim Rowe played with the band for a time starting in 1986. The band self-released Applehead Man in 1986 and put out Are You Shakespearienced? on Gark Records in 1988. A&M Records then released Across the Universe in 1990 and Lulu in 1991. The covers record Volt came out on Twin/Tone Records in 1992 after A&M dropped the band. Trip Shakespeare broke up soon after Lulu. Dan Wilson and John Munson went on to start Semisonic, and Munson and Matt Wilson later played together as The Twilight Hours. The band reunited for a benefit concert in October 2010 and played two songs together at The New Standards' holiday show in 2013.
