History

The Trashmen formed in Minneapolis in 1962 with Tony Andreason on lead guitar, Dal Winslow on rhythm guitar, Bob Reed on bass and Steve Wahrer on drums. The band played surf rock with a raw garage edge that later bands called proto-punk. In 1963 the single Surfin' Bird reached No. 4 in the US and No. 3 in the UK, and the album of the same name came out on Garrett Records. Bird Dance Beat followed in 1964 and reached the US top 30, and a second album, Bird Dance Beat, came out in 1965. The Trashmen stopped in 1967 and came back in 1982, releasing Comic Book Collector in 1989 and recording with Deke Dickerson on Bringing Back the Trash in 2014. Sundazed released the four-CD box set Bird Call!: The Twin City Stomp of the Trashmen in 1998. The band retired after a final run of Minneapolis shows in 2015.
