The Replacements

Active years: 1979 to 1991, reunion 2012 to 2015

Minneapolis, Twin Cities metro

Minneapolis band formed in 1979 whose Twin/Tone and Sire records, like Let It Be and Tim, made it a pioneer of alternative rock.

History

The Replacements formed in Minneapolis in 1979, growing out of a band called Dogbreath, and took the Replacements name in 1980. The first lineup was Paul Westerberg on vocals and guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass, Bob Stinson on guitar and Chris Mars on drums. Slim Dunlap later played lead guitar and Steve Foley played drums near the end. On Twin/Tone Records the band released Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash in 1981, the Stink EP in 1982, Hootenanny in 1983 and Let It Be in 1984. The Replacements then moved to Sire Records for Tim in 1985, Pleased to Meet Me in 1987, Don't Tell a Soul in 1989 and All Shook Down in 1990, which earned a Grammy nomination. The band split in 1991 after a final show in Chicago on July 4. Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reunited the band from 2012 to 2015, playing Riot Fest, Coachella and Primavera Sound, with a last show in Porto, Portugal, in June 2015. Let It Be and Tim are counted among the key records of alternative rock, and the band was a 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee.
