The Castaways

Active years: 1963 to 1968, revived 1970s to 2025

Minneapolis, Twin Cities metro

Twin Cities garage rock band formed in 1963 whose 1965 single Liar, Liar reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

History

The Castaways formed in the Twin Cities in 1963 with Jim Donna on keyboards, Robert Folschow and Roy Hensley on guitars, Dick Roby on bass and vocals, and Dennis Craswell on drums. The band's biggest hit, Liar, Liar, was written by Donna and Craswell and released on Soma Records in 1965. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up, Goodbye Babe, was a local hit. The Castaways played Liar, Liar in the 1967 film It's a Bikini World, and the song later turned up in Good Morning, Vietnam and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The original band broke up in 1968 after more singles but no album, and a greatest hits collection finally came out in 1999. Donna revived the Castaways with new members in the 1970s, and the last version of the band retired after a final show on October 11, 2025.
