Kalopsya

Minnesota metalcore band known for heavy breakdowns: Sam (vocals), Sawyer (lead guitar), Peter (rhythm guitar), Bennett (drums) and Will (bass).

Kalopsya grew out of an earlier project with rhythm guitarist Peter, former bassist Jared and former drummer Jordan. Lead guitarist Sawyer joined around 2019, and that is when the band started writing. Vocalist Sam, drummer Bennett and bassist Will completed the current lineup. The band has played the Amsterdam, Studio B at Skyway Theatre and the River City Slam, filmed its first music video and is releasing an EP.

Fun facts from the interview

  • The name comes from "kalopsia," seeing the world as more beautiful than it really is. The band changed the spelling on purpose.
  • Instead of singing a cover, Sam auditioned by writing vocals to one of the band's own songs.
  • It took almost two years to find a drummer. Bennett came through a "wanted" poster in a music shop.
  • Bennett still plays the drum kit bought in fifth grade, and Metallica was the gateway into metal.
  • Sawyer usually writes the first idea for the band's breakdowns.
  • Bassist Will has played bass only three or four years, inspired by Lemmy's bass lines in Motörhead.
  • Former bassist Jared played "three last shows" and stayed until a new bassist was found, and still comes to practice.
  • A favorite memory: a huge circle pit at the River City Slam during the song "Veil."
  • While playing Studio B, the band snuck onto the empty main stage at Skyway Theatre just to see it.
