Historical Band
Hüsker Dü
Active years: 1979 to 1988
St. Paul, Twin Cities metro
St. Paul trio formed in 1979 that went from hardcore punk to melodic alternative rock and helped shape 1980s American indie music.
History
Hüsker Dü formed in St. Paul in 1979 with Bob Mould on guitar and vocals, Greg Norton on bass and Grant Hart on drums and vocals. Mould and Hart wrote most of the songs. The band started as a hardcore punk band and moved toward melodic punk and alternative rock. After the 1981 single Statues and the 1983 album Everything Falls Apart on Reflex Records, Hüsker Dü moved to SST Records for the Metal Circus EP in 1983, Zen Arcade in 1984, and New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig in 1985. Zen Arcade is often called a landmark of the 1980s American indie scene. In 1986 the band signed with Warner Bros. Records, one of the first American indie bands to join a major label while keeping creative control, and released Candy Apple Grey in 1986 and Warehouse: Songs and Stories in 1987. Hüsker Dü broke up in 1988. Mould went on to Sugar and a solo career, Hart formed Nova Mob, and artists such as Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong have named the band as an influence.
